The Treadmill: My Heart's Best Friend

"Nothing lifts me out of a bad mood better than a hard workout on my treadmill." Cher

I was consumed by an overwhelming sense of anxiety, feeling like I was at my breaking point. The stress had become physical, manifesting as debilitating chest pains that refused to subside. In a state of panic, I found myself rushed to the hospital, lying on a gurney, awaiting a doctor's assessment and a barrage of tests to determine if I was indeed having a heart attack. The agonizing wait for results was punctuated by uncertainty and fear. Thankfully, test after test revealed no evidence of a heart attack, but the experience left an indelible mark on my awareness of stress's devastating impact on my well-being.

Despite the battery of tests, the doctors couldn't pinpoint the exact cause of my symptoms. After hours of uncertainty, I was discharged with a mysterious non-prescription solution, leaving me wondering what it was intended to address. Ironically, it turned out to be a crucial discovery - the remedy helped alleviate my stress. This unexpected turn of events shed new light on my ordeal, and I began to suspect that stress had been the underlying culprit all along.

I returned home and vowed that I would monitor my stress by curtailing my working hours and revamping the manner in which I performed my work duties. While this helped in the short term, I yet felt drained and exhausted. I had no idea what to do about the way I was feeling. Day by day, I continued to work and monitor my stress level.

One day, a co-worker had a pass to a local gym and chose not to go but invited me if I'd like to go. I was not interested but did not want the pass to be wasted. I accepted the free pass and decided I would go to the gym at some point. Going to the gym was not instant. As I recall, there was a deadline for the gym pass. Before the deadline, I arrived at a local gym near my home in New Jersey. It was an all-female gym. I preferred an all-female gym.

I must admit I was very nervous. All the ladies were busy working out as I approached the treadmill and slowly began to walk as I surveyed the other ladies who looked as though they were comfortable in their spaces as they performed their fitness routines. After I programmed my treadmill and started to walk slowly, after laying my newspaper on top of the treadmill to read as I walked.

Also, reading the newspaper would make the time go faster. Since it was my first day in the gym and my first time on a treadmill, I chose to go very slow to see how things would go. I survived the 30 minutes of walking on the treadmill and no one even noticed that I was there. Upon leaving the gym, I noticed I felt a great deal better than when I arrived and as a matter of fact, my stress was gone.

Upon taking note of my new reality, and no stress, I decided to return to the gym. The gym pass given to me was for a week. Feeling great after walking on the treadmill the first day, I continued for the entire week. After a week, I had no stress even when I returned to my duties at my job. I felt better than I had in a very long time. Once the fitness pass expired, with no hesitation, I inquired about purchasing a fitness membership. I purchased my own gym membership. I got a special, a small down payment and the yearly membership was ten dollars.

I joined the gym and enjoyed years and years of a stress-free life from work. I became acquainted with other members. It was like a family. Every day I was at the gym, at the same time and on the treadmill. Over time, I modified my workout to include cardio classes and weight lifting. I remained at this gym for years until it closed. I never felt better in my life. Mental clarity and physically, I felt great. Thus began my fitness journey. Never had the chest pains again, and this profound reality motivated me to keep going.
